PERVERSION OF ANGELS

Choreography: Erika Randall in collaboration with the dancers

Performers: myself and current students and recent alums from CU

music by John Adams, in collaboration with the CU Wind Symphony, under the direction of Don McKinney, Macky Hall, Boulder, CO

This work is a queered homage to Martha Graham’s “Diversion of Angels,” a piece I was cast in while at Juilliard in 1992. The role of The Woman in White (restaged by Ethel Winter) was taken from me two weeks before the performance due to my inability to “lose enough weight” in time for the show.  This was a pivotal moment in my development as an artist and a human and this reclamation and queering of the role of “Mature Love” was a radical gift of self love all these years later. It also created an audacious opportunity for the students to deeply rehearse a complex work and perform it, onstage with a live wind symphony, one time only and then let it go.
